Dr Lionel McCalman
(from Guyana) is a Senior
Lecturer at the School of Education and Community Studies, University of
East London (1994). He has an excellent tract record as a university
lecturer, administrator and sits on a large number of Education
Committees. He obtained his PhD in Anthropology, University College
London and has since published 3 books in the Arts while tutoring both
PhD and undergraduate students. He is a governor at two London Primary
Schools and undertakes an immense number of community-based workshops
and projects to support underprivileged children. He was recently
appointed as an External Examiner to the Department of Education,
University of the West Indies. He is the treasurer of Nostalgia
Steelband and nearly all the activities of the band has rested on his
shoulders for the last 10 years.

Professor Haroun N. Shah
(from Trinidad)
is currently the head of Molecular Identification Services at
government’s Health Protection Agency new ‘Centre for Infections’ He
holds several chairs at various universities and have spent the last 25
years in academic life at the University of London. He has supervised
over 50 postgruduate students and chairs a number of scientific
committees. He is the editor of 3 scientific journals and has published
over 150 peer review scientific papers. He has generated several million
in scientific grant income for basic research and has an extremely
hectic working schedule. However, he has a real passion for steelband
music and for the last 10 years have been a very committed member of
Nostalgia. He is currently one of the band's directors.

Professor Saheer E. Gharbia
(from the Middle East) Head of the Genomics, Proteomics and
Bioinformatics Laboratories at the HPA Centre for Infections (2002).
Following her PhD in molecular Genetics and Biochemistry, The Royal
London Hospital Medical College, University of London, she gained post
graduate experience and then took up scientific positions at McGill
University, Canada before returning to the UK as a Senior Lecturer at the
University of London in 1995. She moved to the School of Biosciences,
University of East London, (1997) and by 1999 became the first female
academic in the UK to be promoted directly to a Chair. She sits on
numerous government scientific committees and is the head of Research
and Development on new technologies for infectious diseases. She has
been an active member of Nostalgia for 8 years now and contributed to
much of its published work.

Adriana Flórez
(from Latin America)
Music teacher for 20 years; currently a qualified Kodály music educator;
applying the Kodály concept of music education with children from 3 to 6
years. Involved in a large of events eg organising concerts, Christmas
plays, day trips, and various multicultural activities. Presently
working with “Baraza Arts Education and Training” as part of a team of
teachers on a project to give young children an awareness of music from
different cultures and also her own project “Music for Everyone” which
is based on the principle that music must be taught to “every single”
child from the earliest possible age. She is the secretary of Nostalgia
Steelband.

Raul Gomez
(from Latin America)
Music tutor working for the Lambeth Music Service
for schools. His activities in art are very varied and includes
performances in several films eg ‘El Alma del Maiz’ (The Soul of the
Corn) filmed in 1995 which included Colombian native percussion
instruments and the drum score for the film Maria Cano (1994). He featured in the stage production ‘The Good Person of Szechwan’ (Berthold
Brecht) and was a percussionist in Jesus Christ Superstar (Colombian
version, 1993) staged by “Estacion Central Producciones”. He is also
drummer/percussionist/performer with different bands eg Yamaha School of
Music and a percussionist with a full symphonic orchestra for the
project, Orquesta Sinfonica Experimental de Colombia. He also plays
Rock, Blues, Latin, Caribbean and Colombian folk music in several venues
and festivals in and around London and the U.K. He is an active
committee member and one of Nostalgia’s most gifted musicians who plays
and also teaches members of the band.
Marvin
Barbe is one of the longest running membership of Nostalgia, having been with the band
from his thirteenth birthday. He was a member of his school steel band
and came to join Nostalgia as a junior member. He has stayed with the
band, and is today one of Nostalgia's top tenor pan players. Marvin is a
student on the B.A. Education and Community Development degree at the
University of East London, and works as a teaching assistant at
Salisbury Primary School, London. He is a keen footballer and is manager
of a ladies football team. At carnival he goes by the name of DJ Super Trini. He mixes all the music and keeps the crowd entertained. Marvin is
a director of Nostalgia Steel Band and Carnival Club. |
